All USPs feature a fiber-reinforced polymer frame that is reinforced with stainless steel inserts in high-stress and high-friction areas. HK pioneered the use of polymer materials in the manufacture of handguns with the development of the VP70Z and P9S pistols more than 30 years ago. Unlike the slide-mounted safeties found on many semi-automatic pistols, the USP control lever is frame mounted and easily accessible. The USP recoil reduction system, which utilizes a modified Browning-type action with a patented recoil reduction system, reduces recoil effects on pistol components while also lowering recoil forces felt by the shooter. The HK Mark 23 pistol developed for the US Special Operations Command features the same recoil reduction system. The USP recoil reduction system is not affected by the type of ammunition and requires no special adjustment or maintenance. It performs admirably in all USP models. The first variant is a dual action/single action with the “SAFE” position. On the left side of the frame, there is a control lever (manual safety/decoking lever).
